I took the plunge today and finally got round to buying a freestyle board.
It's an ex-demo model with a couple of dings so the price was good
considering it's the full blown lightweight pro model. This is an effort
to finally nail those vulcans and move on to other manoeuvres. In addition
to my board we finally got round to getting my other half a board so she
can experience UK sailing, this is her third season and she's never had to
use a wetsuit before!!
Decided to head to Siblyback Lake and get membership as it has all the good
facilities along with rescue cover for the nervous water user. I rigged a
6.2 to try the freestyle board and Michelle rigged a 3.7 for her Mistral
NTrance. I went out for a spin first to get warmed up and was immediately
grateful for the extra buoyancy offered by the 100L as I tacked into a
lull. Spent half an hour helping Michelle with her beach starts before
heading out again. The conditions were horrendously gusty so the ability
to get planing quickly was tested. Plenty of upwind manoeuvres and a
couple of Vulcan attempts. Getting upwind on this board with a 24cm
freestyle fin is remarkably easy with the profiled deck.
A good day on account of getting a new toy to play with and getting
Michelle out on the water. Looking forward to trying the freestyle board
in better winds though.
